Steve Jobs – An artist who changed the world

“We’re here to make a dent in the universe. Otherwise, why even be here? We’re creating a completely new consciousness, like an artist or a poet. That’s how you have to think of this. We’re rewriting the history of human thought with what we’re doing.” – Noah Wyle who portrayed the role of Steve Jobs in “Pirates of Silicon Valley” said in the movie. The film is based on the book Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine.

steve jobs

And actually Steve Jobs was not just the CEO of Apple, he was an artist or a legend who invented the most lovable and revolutionary products of the world that changed everything.

Early Life
Steve Jobs was born to unmarried couple Joanne Carole Schieble and Syrian Muslim Abdulfattah Jandali on Feb.24, 1955 in California. But later on, he was adopted by a Middle Class American Couple Clara & Paul Jobs.

College Dropout

After doing graduation from Homestead High School in Cupertino, California- Steve Jobs took admission in Reed College in Oregon but dropped out after 1st semester only. He then joined Atari in 1974 to gain some work experience.

Beginning of Apple
Steve Jobs along with fellow college dropout and friend Steve Wozniak started Apple in his family garage in California in April 1976. Jobs was the ‘sales’ guy in the company who was working behind how to push sales and Steve Wozniak worked as the Engineer. Prior to Apple, Wozniak was a genius electronics hacker.
Later on, Apple got the funding from Semi- retired Intel Marketing Manager & Engineer A.C. Mike Markkula Jr.
The first computer built was Apple II which introduced the concept of personal computers. Apple sales rose from $7.8 million in 1978 to $117 million in 1980.

apple II

In 1978, Apple recruited Mike Scott from National Semiconductor to serve as CEO for what turned out to be several turbulent years. In 1983, Steve Jobs lured John Sculley away from Pepsi-Cola to serve as Apple’s CEO, asking, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?
In 1984, Apple aired a Super Bowl television commercial titled “1984.”
And launched Macintosh which was the first commercially successful small computer with a graphical user interface.

But in 1985 because of Steve Jobs’ aggressive approach of managing, he was ousted from Apple by John Sculley after a disagreement on how to run the company.

NeXT Computer

After Apple, Steve Jobs founded another company “NeXT Computer”.

next computer

The company was more technologically advanced than Apple & brought first ‘Interpersonal’ Computer- next level to personal computers. Graphical E-Mails were also introduced by this company. But because of high cost of products, company could not sold many products and was not commercially successful.

Relationship with Pixar & Disney

In 1986, Steve Jobs bought The Graphics Group (later renamed Pixar) and after years of unprofitability finally contracted with Disney to produce animated feature films.

toy story

The first film produced by the partnership, Toy Story, brought fame and critical acclaim to the studio when it was released in 1995. Over the next 15 years, the company had produce the box-office hits A Bug’s Life (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009) and Toy Story 3 (2010).
In 2006, Disney purchased the Pixar for $ 7.4 billion but Steve Jobs became the highest single stakeholder with 7% of total stock.

Return to Apple
In 1996, Apple bought NeXT for $429 million which also brought back Steve Jobs to the company. Jobs made some drastic changes in the company like terminated number of unprofitable projects and changed the licensing program for Macintosh clones, making it too costly for the manufacturers to continue making machines.
With the purchase of NeXT, much of the company’s technology found its way into Apple products, most notably NeXTSTEP, which evolved into Mac OS X.

apple tv big

And then with introduction of iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and iPad, the company has became the most valuable brand of the world.

In August 2011, Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple, but remained at the company as chairman of the company’s board.

Arik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek magazine noted that “Jobs isn’t widely known for his association with philanthropic causes”, compared to Bill Gates’ efforts. In 1997, after returning back to Apple as CEO, Jobs eliminated all corporate philanthropy programs.

Favorite Quotations:

1) “Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. … One is very fortunate if you get to work on just one of these in your career. Apple’s been very fortunate it’s been able to introduce a few of these into the world.

2) “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me.”

3) “Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it

4) “The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don’t mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don’t think of original ideas, and they don’t bring much culture into their products.”
“I am saddened, not by Microsoft’s success — I have no problem with their success. They’ve earned their success, for the most part. I have a problem with the fact that they just make really third-rate products.”

5) “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

steve jobs

What other people think about Steve Jobs

1) “You know, Steve was never like you or me, he always saw things differently. Even when I was in Berkeley, I would see something and just see kilobytes or circuit boards while he’d see karma or the meaning of the universe.” – Steve Wozniak

2) “In terms of an inspirational leader, Steve Jobs is really the best I have ever met,”
“He’s got a belief in excellence of products. He’s able to communicate that,”- Bill Gates.

Steve Jobs only earned $1 a year as CEO of Apple but he holds 5.426 million Apple shares, as well as 138 million shares in Disney.
Forbes has estimated his net wealth at $5.1 billion in 2009, making him the 43rd wealthiest American.

Some other facts

1) Jobs always wanted to study and experience spiritualism and existentialism. In India, he wanted to visit the Neem Karoli Baba at his Kainchi Ashram. However, when he arrived in 1970s he learn’t that Baba has died.

2) Steve Jobs is a Buddhist and a vegetarian.

3) Steve Jobs named the company as “Apple” because Apple is his favorite food.

Facebook closing down its Discount Deal Business

The Social Networking website Facebook has announced that they are shutting down their Daily Deal Business after four months of testing. After the success of Groupon and LivingSocial, Facebook has entered into the Discount Deals Business four months ago in 5 big US cities.

facebook deals

“After testing Deals for four months, we have decided to shut down our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses.”, Facebook said in a statement emailed to Reuters.
“We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Check-in deals, Pages, and Sponsored Stories. We have learned a lot from our test & we will continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.”

I think it’s a great move by Facebook as they can still do so much in the Social Networking field, they should not focus on other aspects of business.

Everything you need to know about “Google Panda”

What is Google Panda?

Google Panda is a new algorithm launched by Google on February 24, 2011. It works against the websites with low quality content or duplicate content by lowering down their search rankings in the Google search.
It prevents sites with huge database of duplicate content from dominating the Google search rankings.

google panda

How Google Panda works ?

The smart people in Google have created this algorithm which search down the huge database of million of websites available on world wide web. If pages of your website have a High Panda Ranking (High is Bad), it means you are being punished by Google for having duplicate content on your pages and site. The Google search engine will show the results of ‘Low Panda Ranking’ Websites higher in their search queries.

Reasons behind getting “Panda Slap”

The slang term used to define the site which is being punished by Google Panda for low quality content is known as “Panda Slap”. The first and foremost reason your site will get a “Panda Slap” is due to the duplicate content on a single or multiple pages of a website. Other reasons could be:
– Very less original content on the website
– Inappropriate Information on the website. Your keywords or tags must match with the content of the article.
– Too many links of poor sites linked to your site can also hurt your Panda rankings.
– Too many advertisements on a page with little content.
– High Bounce rate and less time spend by users on your site.
– Too many affiliate links.

How to Check if your website is being punished by Google Panda or not?

If you see huge drop in your traffic status, that means your website is being punished by Google Panda and you will find out that many of your URLs are not in the Google search list.

How to Recover from “Panda Slap”

If your website is being penalized by Google, then you should do the following things to increase your Google search rankings again:
– Remove the duplicate content pages or make it Error 404.
– Write original articles with high quality content to increase your rankings.
– Decrease your site bounce rate by promoting it on various social networking sites.
– Submit it to Google for reconsideration.
But the whole process could take up several weeks.

Why Google launched “Google Panda”?

I believe it’s a great move by Google to stop duplicate content sites overtaking high quality sites. This will detect scraper sites with no original content and will stop them to rank higher.

Regular Updates

Google is regularly updating their Google Panda algorithm to bring more “Human Factor” into their algorithm and improve their search queries.

February 24, 2011: Google Panda 1.0
April, 2011: Google Panda 2.0
May 10, 2011: Google Panda 2.1
June 16, 2011: Google Panda 2.2
July 26, 2011: Google Panda 2.3
August 12, 2011: Google Panda 2.4
September 28, 2011: Google Panda 2.5
October 19, 2011: Google Panda 3.0
November 18, 2011: Google Panda 3.1
January 18, 2012: Google Panda 3.2
February 27, 2012: Google Panda 3.3
March 24, 2012: Google Panda 3.4

Google Panda is not “SWITCH ON” 24*7:

Google Panda is not something which is continuously monitoring each site. But actually, it works its magic once every few weeks to monitor each site in their database.

Twitter introduces “Image Galleries”

In a recent update, Twitter introduced Photo galleries where an user can aggregate all its images which have been uploaded on the Twitter Profile into an organized page which will display up to 100 most recent images in your Tweets, in chronological but will only include images after January 1, 2010.

The images included in user photo galleries can come from Twitter, yFrog, TwitPic, Instagram and other image sharing services supported in Twitter’s details pane.

The User Galleries will not show tweets with video links in User Galleries.

User Galleries Profile View: The User galleries can be found on the user profile page.

twitter galleries

User Galleries Grid View: It will show the thumbnails of all images.

twitter galleries grid view

User Galleries Detail View:
It will show the recent image with the tweet displayed below it and thumbnails of other images above it.

twitter user galleries

Users can also easily remove the images by simply deleting the respective tweets.
Twitter also points out that if your images appear black, it means content partners’ servers are overloaded as the feature is still in testing phase.

I believe it’s a great move by the Twitter management as it will give users one more reason to come on the website apart from just 140 words’ tweet as photos are the important part of a social network. This continues the improvement in every social networking site to tackle the competition arising out of Google Plus after Facebook also added Video chat and some changes in interface layout.

Google has recently introduced verification badges to Google+ users. Initially, the move has been taken to verify celebrities, public figures, or those who have simply been added to a lot of circles. This will help people to follow the real celebrities or public figures.

“For now, we are focused on verifying public figures, celebrities, & people who’ve been added to a large no. of Circles, but we are working on expanding this to more folks.”, Google’s Wen-Ai Yu said in a Google+ post.
