Google Kills Free Version of Apps for Businesses

Google Apps

Google has killed off the free version of its useful apps for businesses. Google Apps offers Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, in-browser word processor, spreadsheet and presentation graphics app.

Google Apps

Google Apps

Earlier, there were two versions of Google Apps – free and premium. The free version allowed you to use Google Apps for up to 10 users. But now there will be only one version – Premium. Businesses with 10 or fewer people will now have to pay $5 per user per month or $50 per user per year.

Though the change will not effect the existing users and they can continue using free services for up to 10 users.

How to Use Google Apps for free for new domains

If you already have an existing Google Apps account under any of your domains, you can still use Google Apps for free even for new domains. All you have to do is to add another domain to that account. The setting is located under Domain settings in your Google Apps account.
Or if you are a new user, check out this simple workaround. All you need is a free Gmail or Google account.

Office 365, the main competitor of Google’s Apps market, also offers only paid plans currently. Both companies offer free trials.

So, what do you think of this move by Google? Would it hurt small businesses and bloggers?

How to Verify Your Website/Tumblr Blog on Pinterest

Social Media Updates on Pinterest

Just like Facebook, Twitter and Google+, Pinterest also introduced a feature for profile pages that allows you to verify your website on Pinterest. The new feature will highlight your full site URL on your Pinterest profile pages. “When your site is verified, users will see a checkmark next to your domain name in search results. They will also see the full site URL & checkmark on your profile.”

This feature will be available to all the profiles within a week or so, so it is possible that you won’t see the verify website option in your settings immediately.

Social Media Updates on Pinterest

How to Verify Your Website on Pinterest

1) Log in to your account and go to Pinterest.com/settings.

2) If the verified option is available to you, then choose “Verify Website”(Positioned next to the field where you fill your website information).

Pinterest Verification

3) Download the HTML Verification file.

4) Log in to your Hosting account. Select “File Manager” under Files section. Then select “Home Directory” and click on “Go”. There, open the “public_html” folder and upload the HTML file you’ve downloaded from Pinterest.

5) Click on “Click here” on the Pinterest verification page to complete the process. You can later delete the HTML file from your public_html folder.

For now, the verified option is only for “top-level” domains such as youngblah.com, and not youngblah.wordpress.com. Most blogging platforms (such as Blogger or WordPress) and eCommerce sites (such as Etsy, eBay) do not allow you to upload HTML files. Tumblr is an exception; step by step process for verifying a Tumblr blog can be found here.

It’s a great step by Pinterest to increase the visibility of official content creators and brand profiles. Also, the link from Pinterest to your website is “Dofollow”, so I’m sure it will also benefit webmasters in their SEO efforts.

So, what do you think of this move by Pinterest? Have you verified your website yet?

Everything You Need To Know About Recent Algorithm Changes By Google

Google Algrithm Changes

Google has made too many significant changes in their algorithm in the last three weeks. It all started with the Google Panda Update 20 on September 27, 2012. This is the 20th update of Google Panda since it’s first update on February 24, 2011(which impacted 11.8% of English search queries). Google confirmed that the new Panda algorithm update is not just a data refresh but an algorithm update.

This was one of the major Panda update as it impacted 2.4% of English search queries and a smaller impact in other languages (for example, 0.5% in French and Spanish).

Google Algrithm Changes

Then, Google announced the Exact Match Domain(EMD) update on September 28, 2012 that is targeted to remove the low-quality exact match domain sites from ranking well and higher in Google search.
So, if you see any changes in your traffic around September 27 or 28 – chances are that your site has been punished by any of these updates.

Then came the Google Penguin Update 3 on October 5, 2012 that will impact search queries across multiple languages including 0.3% in English. This is the third update of Google Penguin since it’s first update on April 24, 2012(which impacted 3.1% of English search queries).
Google confirmed that it’s just a data refresh of Penguin algorithm and not an algorithm update.

The most recent change is Top Heavy Update 2 which was rolled out on October 9th, 2012 which impacted 0.7% of English search queries. Top Heavy update, which was first announced in January, 2012 is targeted at web pages with too many ads “above the fold,” also known as Google’s ‘Page Layout’ algorithm.

Apart from these changes, Google also announced changes in their YouTube algorithm last week. YouTube will now reward videos with higher engagement in their search rather than videos with just more clicks.

So, if you see changes in your web traffic in the last three weeks – your site is most likely affected by any of these changes. In that case – you can follow our guide about “How To Survive Any Google Panda or Penguin Updates”.

Clicks on paid search results outdo organic clicks by almost a 2:1 margin for keywords with high commercial intent in the United States.
