You just can’t joke with US Special Agents and especially about “Destroying America”.
Why? Read this.
Before Leigh Van Bryan with his friend Emily Bunting left on a holiday to Los Angeles, Van Bryan tweeted that he was going to “destroy America,” and also boasted that he would try “digging up Marilyn Monroe” during his trip across the Hollywood.
The pair was arrested by armed guards on arrival at Los Angeles International Airport. According to both the friends, they were treated like terrorists as they were questioned for five hours before being handcuffed, put in a van with illegal immigrants & locked up overnight.
Van Bryan told The Sun:
“The Homeland Security agents were treating me like some kind of terrorist. I kept saying they had got the wrong meaning from my tweet but they just told me ‘You’ve really f***ed up with that tweet, boy’.”
Twelve hours later, after both being held in separate cells with Leigh Van Bryan shared his cell with Mexican drug dealers, the pair was released & put on a plane home.
Last year in 2010 also, Paul Chambers was arrested on terrorism charges for tweeting about his frustration when bad weather delayed his flight.
Paul tweeted,” “Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You’ve got a week to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!”
In his trial, he was found guilty of “Sending by a public communications network a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character” & fined £1000.
Due to this incident, he has lost his job twice.
Following the incident, lot of users showed their support with #twitterjoketrial tweets and one user even offered to pay the fine.
So, I would suggest you to “Think Twice Before You Tweet” or just make your profile private. 8)
